One of the central questions in the study of cognitive development refers to the role of language. In this work we defend Vygotsky's proposal that the development of language restructures thinking, based on recent evidence, which has been accumulated within a program of neo-Whorfian inspiration. After reviewing the pattern of recent empirical evidence of the neo-Whorfian program, we defend the idea that the central difference for cognitive development lies in acquiring a language (versus not acquiring it), and not so much between acquiring one language or another. The cognitive differences derived from linguistic differences are minor in comparison.
